October 24, 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

The AngelNV Entrepreneur Bootcamp is for aspiring or current startup founders that are considering raising capital, and want to learn “what angel investors want” to see in a business venture.

Do you want to learn how to raise capital and develop your startup? Free founder bootcamp – open to all: Register now!

Founder bootcamp dives deep into a different, important topic each week.  Each topic is important to “nail” to prove to potential investors that you, as a founder, are on top of your game in the market where your solution will be competing.

This week’s topic is:

Startup Markets: TAM | SAM | SOM.

Is your market big enough to be “venture scalable”?  Have you done the research and projections?  Are you looking at the best / right market data for your solution? How and where do you find the market data to be sure?  If venture capital isn’t the right answer… then what is?

Register first, then log-in 2 minutes early and attend via zoom at: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85157882535 … or for more fun and great networking attend live and in person in Las Vegas, then go out after the session with your new colleagues… walk to some cool spots in the Arts District (10 min walk) or immerse yourself in the awesome weirdness that is the Fremont Street Experience. (3 min walk)

Attend in person – 300 S. 4th St, Suite 180, Las Vegas, NV 89101 (corner of Lewis and S. 4th)  Free parking at the Historic 5th Street School (across the street)

What the heck is TAM SAM SOM?

TAM – Total Addressable MarketThe worldwide market for your startup’s specific solution.  Be sure to get the category correct.  If you are selling a SaaS / software solution to insurance companies to help them manage their broker network, your TAM is NOT all insurance sold in the world.  It is software (SaaS) sold to the insurance industry.   TAM is a number that you research using market focused large databases.  In Nevada, as a Nevada resident – you can access these large, costly databases through UNLV and UNR — ask the research librarian for assistance with access.  They will not do the work for you, but they’ll help you get started… on the library computers or on your laptop while you’re connected on the university wifi.

SAM – Serviceable Addressable MarketSAM is a subset of TAM. Typically, SAM is geographic, industry, or demographically focused.  A common SAM is the US market subset of the world wide market.  SAM could also be a subset by age, gender, income level, or some other demographic combination.  SAM is a number you research the same as TAM.

SOM –  Serviceable Obtainable Market. SOM is your “bottom up” sales forecast within your SAM for 3 years.  Do not use a percentage of the SAM.  Year 1 should be month by month.  Year 2 should be quarter by quarter.  Year 3 and beyond can be calculated by year.  Sales forecasting for a new offering can be difficult and uncertain, but it shows your investor how you’re thinking about it.  It also shows your potential investors how much of the SAM you can conquer in better detail than using a “simple” (lazy) percentage of SAM.  The bottom up forecast forces a month by month view which will imply certain go to market tactics.

TAM, SAM and SOM should be stated in dollars (currency).  It is helpful to show people, companies, seats, widgets, or whatever your sales units are — but you must state it in dollars (currency).

It is commonly shown as a stacked VEN diagram:
